Ukraine, Billi: EU does not want peace, Trump’s only hope
Brussels, 26/07/2024 – The X legislature of the European Parliament is off to a rocky start. Among the first acts voted on by this new majority is the resolution regarding the EU’s continuous support for Ukraine, which defines the newly elected European Parliament’s official stance on Russia’s aggressive war against Ukraine.
This resolution consists of 9 points approved with 495 in favor, 137 against, and 47 abstentions. However, it presents three significant issues.
The first problem is that the word “peace” never appears in this resolution, nor is there an explicit call to continue working towards peace as soon as possible. Why did the new majority in the European Parliament omit such a crucial point, even after the observations from the Lega Salvini Premier MEPs? Unfortunately, the answer remains unclear.
Furthermore, point 5 of this resolution urges EU countries to increase their military support to Ukraine in any requested form. This is extremely concerning and could lead to catastrophic escalation.
Another issue arises from point 4, where the resolution condemns Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s visit to Russia. However, considering exploratory missions by Zelensky in Ukraine, Xi Jinping in China, Biden and Trump in the USA, how can we achieve peace if we don’t engage in dialogue with all parties involved? Is the intention to prolong the war?
The Lega Salvini Premier has consistently supported Ukraine, voting in favor of all measures benefiting the country and unequivocally condemning Putin’s aggression against Ukraine. We are committed to pursuing all necessary initiatives to achieve peace as quickly as possible.
After two and a half years of conflict, it’s clear that Ukraine cannot win the war. Our last hope lies in the possibility of Donald Trump being elected as the new US President in November. With him, peace in Ukraine may be closer.
As evidence of the resolution’s problems, consider that two PD (Democratic Party) MEPs, Strada and Tarquinio, abstained, while members of the majority in Brussels, such as the Greens Guarda, Orlando, and Scuderi, voted against. Other AVS (Greens and Leftists Alliance) members and the entire M5S (Five Star Movement) delegation also voted against it.” – declared Simone Billi, MP for the Abroad-Europe Constituency and whip of Lega Salvini Premier in the Foreign Affairs Committee.
